LPRV Aquifer Management: Physical Hydrology

Based on this best-estimate of the southern valley's recharge capacity, and an upper estimate of the amount of precipitation-derived recharge which the Pocatello Creek watershed may provide, the overall valley aquifer water balance indicates that, for the 1999 municipal pumping demand (a near-normal water year), demand is at about 80% of known capacity.

In the following section, we'll look briefly at the watersheds which supply the aquifer with recharge, its hydrologic uniqueness, and the best available estimates of the aquifer's ability to meet future demand - its water supply capacity. This underscores the fact that the aquifer is a limited resource and needs to be managed in such a manner as to maintain its long-term sustainability.
