Ground water can be contaminated from a variety of activities at the land surface. All of the contamination sources indicated in this figure are either known or suspected in parts of the lower Portneuf Valley.

Although the Portneuf River does not contribute significant recharge to the aquifer, it still leaks along its length, perhaps more so in the northern valley than in the south.
